Legislation introduced in 2000 and subsequently amended allows large Companies to offer share options to up to key employees.
It allows up to £100,000 worth of options to be awarded to employees with no tax or National Insurance Contributions (NICs) when the options were granted or exercised. Instead capital gains tax would be charged when the shares were sold.
