British-born grandparents
Commonwealth citizens with a British-born grandparent can come to the UK to work or to seek work. They need to prove their descent from the person born in the UK, by having the grandparent's birth certificate, the grandparents' marriage certificate, the birth certificate of the father or other descended from the grandparent, the parents marriage certificate and the applicant's birth certificate. If the parents or grandparents were not married, any other evidence to show the relationship will be helpful, such as affidavits from people who knew them to confirm that they are the parents, or any evidence from school or medical records showing the family connections. The person applying needs to be at least 17 years old. People coming to the UK for this purpose need entry clearance; people already in the country, for example as visitors, may be permitted to change their status and should apply on form FLR(0).
People will be allowed to enter or remain for four years, without any restrictions on employment. At the end of the four years they may apply for settlement, which will be granted provided they have been working and are able to maintain and accommodate themselves without recourse to public funds.
