Writers, Composers and Artists
There is a specific provision in the rules for self-employed writers, composers and artists to be given entry clearance. They do not need to have £200,000 but have to show that they have established themselves abroad and will be able to make enough money to support themselves and any dependants without recourse to public funds, from the proceeds of their artistic work. They are not able to take any other employment in the UK but if they also have savings or private means they may use them to support themselves as well as their art, composing or writing. Writers will not normally include freelance journalists; artists may include art photographers and sculptors but not performing artists, such as actors, musicians, dancers and singers, who need to obtain work permits. Writers, composers and artists will be allowed in for four years; the spouse and children under 18 will be granted extensions of stay in line, and they can all apply to settle near the end of the four-year period.
